Library Connections and Book Clubs

Reading a great book about adventure and wilderness survival can awaken your imagination and sense of wonder. Learning how to do the skills in real life that your favorite character performed can really bring the book to life! There are so many great classic adventure books out there with a wilderness survival theme, think Hatchet, My Side of the Mountain, Island of The Blue Dolphin, and Call of The Wild. There are also some fantastic contemporary works like Red Fox Road, Distress Signal, and Alone In The Woods to name a few. The survival skills may be slightly different in each book, but they all deal with Shelter, Fire, Water, and Food in some capacity. Below you will find a sample course outline for Red Fox Road.

Course example

  • Ice breakers and warm up games.
  • Brief discussion about the book and the survival skills featured.
  • Introduction to fire building. Learn how to construct a one match fire.
  • Introduction to water purification methods.
  • Introduction to wild foods.
  • Introduction to trapping.
  • Review and debrief.

Duration of Class: 3 to 5 hours.

Class Size: Minimum of 2, maximum of 5.

Ages: 7 and older. Adults must be present for children under the age of 13.
